Leonardo was here….

I’m laying in bed writing this in the house previously owned by a Anna Magnani a famous Italian Film actress who coached Sophia Loren. It’s next door to the house Leonard De Vinci lived in and overlooks the Adda river from a high bank which is the last thing you want to see at the end of a cycle ride! The house itself looks like it hasn’t really changed since the films stars days and is full of dark wood furniture and paneling. Even the staircases have small steps to allow well dressed ladies not to trip over their skirts when using them. The day’s been full of...

And we’re off…

Linda’s knee is now better and the summer holidays are over with the campsites thinning out and it’s time to head off again on Tilly for another short trip. This time the mountains are calling (at least the downhill bits anyway) and we’re off to Switzerland and heading south to the sun in Italy and Venice. The trip started in the most uninspiring fashion with the taxi to Scipol airport in Amsterdam not turning up at the 9:30 appointment and us finding out it had “touched a car” and would be late. It did turn up at 10 and the driver tried to go faster than the...

Better late than never…

The world cup may not be coming home this year but Tilly finally arrived back home two weeks after we arrived back in the UK having been to Paris then back to New York then back again to Stansted. She managed to get lost in New York and then in Stansted too while no one really knew where she was and when she was likely to be back home. We had phone calls telling us she would arrive on a date and she didn’t and then appeared in a different country and then phone calls telling us she had arrived followed by a text telling us she hadn’t as was still in the USA. Then when she finally...

We didn’t kneed that!

We didn’t kneed that!

You never know what’s around the corner and around the corner for us was a knee injury for Linda. Cycling along on the flat, on a lovely day in beautiful countryside in hardly any wind Linda suddenly yelled stop as her knee twanged! We stopped and put ice on it from our cool box, Linda took some ibuprofen and painkillers but she was unable to cycle with that leg afterwards. Fortunately we were quite near a hotel and limped on for a nights recovery in another flea pit hotel! Some of the hotels here are simply dreadful! The next morning the knee had recovered slightly and we peddled on...

Heading north

Heading north

Leaving Plymouth we crossed the Albemarle Sound and headed to Edenton for a night. This picturesque town set by the water was an old Railroad town where trains boarded a ferry to cross the sound. The trains are long gone but the town has remained a cute small town with an electric boat tour of the harbour and some nice restaurants and bars. It almost felt like we were back in Europe! We really enjoyed our night here and managed to plot routes on back roads all the way back out to the Atlantic coast and the resort of Virginia Beach via a small German Rhine like ferry from Currituck to Knott...

A tale of two countries

Leaving the bikers and noise behind and with the weather set to be stormy we continued North inland away from the predicted rain along the coast. By and large we managed to avoid most of it, but when it rains it RAINS! The weather channels were full of flood warnings and a small town nearby got washed away by a wall of water wiping it out for the second time in 2 years in a ‘once in a thousand years event’. Climate change my arse! It’s impossible to cycle in this rain – it’s just too heavy so we had to hole up for a day at a hotel waiting for it to pass in...
