Las Vegas of the East

Las Vegas of the East

Once back on the coast we were able to cycle almost in perfect isolation northwards. The chain of islands south of the Casino haven of Atlantic City all have toll bridges, only a dollar for a car, but enough to make people avoid coming over them and using the main coast road. This kept the whole road to us, and we didnt even have to pay a toll! Crossing our last bridge before Atlantic City we could see the skyscrapers towering in the distance. So much so that the middles were lost in a sandy haze making them look like the tops were floating on the beach. The boardwalk in was a lovely cycle,...

A Senior Moment

The cycle north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is lovely – though we did meet some cyclists who couldn’t understand why we thought that! It’s very reminiscent of East Anglia, largely flat, fields of corn, few houses and little traffic. It’s a gorgeous cycle but the choice of accommodation is somewhat less due to the abscence of much worth seeing and people. We therefore had to stay in some very poorly rated hotels on the way up. The first was in the town of Nassawadox – a great name- and the only way we could find to get to it was by cycling the wrong way...

Watch out for Mosquitos

Watch out for Mosquitos

The further north you travel the more proper crockery and cutlery you find in places. Who knows, maybe it migrates north for the winter! We’ve now been able to pick cafes by their environmental criteria, Green seems to be the upcoming thing here, but only very half heartedly. We stopped at an environmental friendly cafe (it said everywhere) to find the food and drink still came in single use containers but they were compostable! The owner made the mistake of asking us if we had enjoyed our food after we had eaten and then got an earfull from us both of the benefits of PROPER crockery!...

Call the Sheriff!

We arrived in our 7 seater luxury at the Jacksonville North Carolina regional airport, loaded up Tilly and set off to find that the North Carolina abbreviation NC, means No Cyclists! The traffic was so different from Florida with cars coming soooo close to us that we used our 1.5m flag pole with the Union Flag on it horizontally attached to the tent to ward off the unwanted attention. This works well, but annoys the crap out of oncoming drivers, who now have to contend with the 12.6 Litre 5000hp pickups that hang a long way behind you politely, wait for a gap then accelerate only to find...

Feet up time!

Our stay with the secret cousins was fabulous. Rob is my mum’s second cousin and we were all totally unaware of each other (despite at one time only living a few miles apart in Suffolk) until my mum’s cousin died and Rob materialised at the funeral, not in the Star Trek Beam down way, but just about as surprising! My mum and Rob hit it off big time and mum was so pleased to have found a another cousin, especially one as charming as Rob. We visited Rob and his wife Joy last year on our US cycle trip and had such a great time we’ve come back again! They have a great villa on...

Exhausted

Ok, we’re not looking for sympathy – we choose to cycle tour and accept the drawbacks that go with this as well as the great times – but we’ve managed to run out of energy, just as we reached our secret cousins. Which begs the question did we just have enough energy to get there, or is it merely psychological? It’s not all our fault though! Though thinking about it it probably is. You see, we had planned to stay in Mexico beach for a few nights as last year it was on of our favourite places on the Forgotten Coast. We’d even thought we’d stay at the...
