Palermo

After we had managed to find a restaurant for our first Sicilian supper, which turned out to be delicious, things didn’t start well on day 2 when I managed to lock us out of our bedroom when we went to breakfast, leaving the key in the door inside the room. In my defence, I’m an idiot. Anyway, the hotel were used to it and took the handle off the door so quickly it made you wonder what the point of the lock was! But after 24 hours here we think we’ve sussed the drivers. The people we’ve met are nice, kind, enthusiastic about us and just how we find most people in most...

The Godfather tour…

Nealy 6 months after we returned from our Reverse Camino tour with an injured Linda, we are off again.  The recovery of the knee has progressed well, it just takes longer when your not as young as you once were!  We have been able to cycle since we returned but nothing too strenuous….Yet! But now Linda feels that she’s fully fit once more so we are off…to the home of the Italian Mafia, which, to be fair will be a hellofalot safer than the USA at the moment even if they hadn’t just arrested the head of the Mafia here! We always feel unfit when we set off, but...

Aurevoir France

Beautiful canal route from Nantes Rennes Dinan Our last coffee stop… End of the road… Our last sunset! All aboard… Au revoir ????????.. We’ve enjoyed our cycle up through France, there’s been some fabulous cities to visit -La Rochelle, Rochefort, Nantes and in particular Rennes which we would definitely like to come back to. We’ve love the cycle infrastructure once you’re away from the Spanish border. One way streets seem to always be two way for cyclists, even if they’re narrow! Cycle lanes are usually two way segregated not just a white line...

Hot hot hot!

Royan Fishermans huts The floating bridge.. Bastille Day Montaigu Castle Montaigu old market hall The coastal cycle path LA Rochelle harbour 7.30 pm!! ???? Cooling off in the Nantes fountains at 9.30pm! If you’re a climate change denier please go into the bathroom, look in the mirror then slap yourself round the face a few times and say in Captain Mainwarings voice “Stupid boy”.  It’s getting very warm down here now and the forecast is for 39 later in the week with lows of 25 overnight, so our whole plan has changed to plot our route via Aircon hotels as a lack of...

Bonjour France!

Avoiding the coastal corniche.. Our route along the coast.. Euro Velo 1 Biaritz! Bay of Biarritz Forest path /roman Road! Always the first stop of the day… Calm before the storm… Oops… Lost again! Another day, another marina… Memorial to the cockleshell hero’s. The trouble with the French border is that’s just about where the cycle track ends and the mad French drivers begin. We’ve been lulled into a false sense of security by the excellent, courteous and patient Spanish drivers and the impatient uncaring French drivers came as a real shock to us....

Adios Espagne, Tick that off our list…

San Sebastian cycle pathsSan Sebastian Sea Chimes Beach artMaria Christina Bridge Spain/France border crossing…. We had two days off in San Sebastian, the 2nd because it was a wet miserable day on the first, so we added a day to see the seaside resort in the sunshine. Whilst we were staying the World Dance Championships were being held there and ‘Team England’ (why do they say it that way round? You don’t go round saying Apple Braeburn do you?) Seemed to follow us around restaurants. The thing we always struggle with in Spain is food. I know, I’m a right fussy...
