On to Taipei
Our first proper cycle was good to get under our belt during the Chinese New Year with the much reduced traffic. We didn’t actually have to venture on to too many roads as there’s a very good cycle network here and where that is absent you can tuck yourself in amongst the three million mopeds that dominate the road. They even have their own roads! So sometimes you have a footpath, next to a cycle path, next to a moped dual carriageway next to a main road. The taxi turned up 45 mins early, we arrived at Norwich airport hours early and had an easy check in with no problems with our luggage or Tilly and a nice snack and farewell Jenever at an airport bar at Schipol before boarding the 12 hour flight to Taipei. That went smoothly, was comfortable with plenty of leg room, good food and a good entertainment system too. Shame about the babies that cried non stop but that’s what ear plugs are...

This year we’re off to Taiwan to circumnavigate the island in an anti clockwise direction, hopefully taking full advantage of the winds down the west coast to get our fitness back before we hit the hills on the east coast. We’re flying with KLM from Norwich and have as usual got to strip Tilly down to the bare essentials to get in our weight and size limits. We have 23kg and dimensions of 205 x 25 x 75 to squeeze her into and surprisingly this year it was all fairly straight forward. We rather reluctantly left the luxury of Atlantic City and began our final leg northwards by…. going south… err… the bridges out of Atlantic City in the north are fast wide roads and not our cup of tea, so we headed south to a smaller bridge that looked ideal to find that it was closed to cyclists and we could either head back north to the main highways or head further south still! Once back on the coast we were able to cycle almost in perfect isolation northwards. The chain of islands south of the Casino haven of Atlantic City all have toll bridges, only a dollar for a car, but enough to make people avoid coming over them and using the main coast road. This kept the whole road to us, and we didnt even have to pay a toll! Crossing our last bridge before Atlantic City we could see the skyscrapers towering in the distance.
