Hello Taiwan
http://www.lindaandjon.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/VID_20200127_112357.mp4 Everything went like clockwork for the journey from Ipswich to Taipei. The taxi turned up 45 mins early, we arrived at Norwich airport hours early and had an easy check in with no problems with our luggage or Tilly and a nice snack and farewell Jenever at an airport bar at Schipol before boarding the 12 hour flight to Taipei. That went smoothly, was comfortable with plenty of leg room, good food and a good entertainment system too. Shame about the babies that cried non stop but that’s what ear plugs are...

This year we’re off to Taiwan to circumnavigate the island in an anti clockwise direction, hopefully taking full advantage of the winds down the west coast to get our fitness back before we hit the hills on the east coast. We’re flying with KLM from Norwich and have as usual got to strip Tilly down to the bare essentials to get in our weight and size limits. We have 23kg and dimensions of 205 x 25 x 75 to squeeze her into and surprisingly this year it was all fairly straight forward. Sadly our battery on the phone ran out at the end of the time-lapse video below toward the end....

We rather reluctantly left the luxury of Atlantic City and began our final leg northwards by…. going south… err… the bridges out of Atlantic City in the north are fast wide roads and not our cup of tea, so we headed south to a smaller bridge that looked ideal to find that it was closed to cyclists and we could either head back north to the main highways or head further south still! We chose the southerly route and crossed back on to the mainland almost 20km south of Atlantic city. Despite the road being a cycle route, some of the drivers really didn’t like having to...

Once back on the coast we were able to cycle almost in perfect isolation northwards. The chain of islands south of the Casino haven of Atlantic City all have toll bridges, only a dollar for a car, but enough to make people avoid coming over them and using the main coast road. This kept the whole road to us, and we didnt even have to pay a toll! Crossing our last bridge before Atlantic City we could see the skyscrapers towering in the distance. So much so that the middles were lost in a sandy haze making them look like the tops were floating on the beach. The boardwalk in was a lovely cycle,...

The cycle north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is lovely – though we did meet some cyclists who couldn’t understand why we thought that! It’s very reminiscent of East Anglia, largely flat, fields of corn, few houses and little traffic. It’s a gorgeous cycle but the choice of accommodation is somewhat less due to the abscence of much worth seeing and people. We therefore had to stay in some very poorly rated hotels on the way up. The first was in the town of Nassawadox – a great name- and the only way we could find to get to it was by cycling the wrong way...

The further north you travel the more proper crockery and cutlery you find in places. Who knows, maybe it migrates north for the winter! We’ve now been able to pick cafes by their environmental criteria, Green seems to be the upcoming thing here, but only very half heartedly. We stopped at an environmental friendly cafe (it said everywhere) to find the food and drink still came in single use containers but they were compostable! The owner made the mistake of asking us if we had enjoyed our food after we had eaten and then got an earfull from us both of the benefits of PROPER crockery!...
